CORDURA® + DuPont Tate & Lyle Collaboration

A Future Where Durability and Sustainability Interconnect.

Leading designers of apparel, footwear and gear are demanding innovative, eco-efficient fabric  solutions. And we’re listening. That’s why we got together with an industry leader that is breaking new ground in sustainability. The future is now in the latest DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products. We’ll be bringing designers the first in a series of eco-innovations powered by the long-lasting durability of CORDURA® fabrics.

This new marriage of technologies means one outcome: durable next generation fabrics featuring high performance Susterra® bio based propanediol coatings and membranes. In addition to being renewably sourced, Susterra® is manufactured using a sustainable process that produces 50% greenhouse gas emissions and consumes 42% less non-renewable energy than equivalent petroleum-based diols. At the manufacturing facility’s full capacity, that is equivalent to taking 40,000 passenger cars off the road and turning off one million 100W incandescent lightbulbs for one full year.

To help make this idea a reality, we’ve engaged our first authorized footwear and apparel mills, Tiong Liong and Everest, to develop durable bio-based CORDURA® fabric solutions.

  • Footwear: Tiong Liong’s CORDURA® EcoMade and CORDURA® AFT fabric innovations are laminated with a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) bio-based membrane based on Susterra® propanediol, which is designed so that perspiration can get out but water cannot get in, helping to keep your feet dry and comfortable in all weather.
  • Apparel: Everest’s CORDURA® Naturalle™ fabrics incorporate a polyurethane bio-based membrane which contains more than 25 percent renewable sourced materials by weight.  These fabrics are engineered to help keep your body dry and comfortable in all kinds of weather. The Susterra® propanediol based membrane demonstrates good hydrolysis resistance, excellent low temperature flexibility and elasticity thus allowing the membranes to be incorporated with stretch fabrics for added mobility.

Combine the hard work of our mills, the legendary durability of INVISTA’s CORDURA® fabrics, and the dedication to a sustainable lifestyle of DuPont Tate & Lyle, and the outcome is an unbeatable combination of performance features. It is really just the start of a great relationship. Watch below to get a closer look.

“Working with DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products is the beginning of great things to come,” said Cindy McNaull, global CORDURA® brand and marketing director. “At the core of our brand’s DNA is a dedication to delivering durable next-generation fabric technologies. Products made with CORDURA® fabrics are long-lasting, which means they need to be replaced less often, helping reduce waste. We constantly look at ways to increase the utility and durability of our products and ways we can benefit the environment.  Ultimately, our belief is that ‘Sustainability Begins With Products That Last™’, and this forms the perfect backdrop for our collaboration with DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products.”
