Inspiring Tomorrow’s Designers
Through years of participation in student design competitions, we’ve discovered it is often the students who teach us the most. We get the opportunity to see our technologies brought to light in new and creative ways—often much quicker than typical market adoptions allow.
That’s why we were excited to once again collaborate with the Professional Clothing Awards on the 2018 PCA VISION contest. We sponsored the competition and also awarded our own CORDURA® Durable Design Award to continue our commitment to inspire and honor exceptional workwear, corporate clothing and PPE designs.
For the first time, the contest was opened up to participating schools across Europe, including those in the U.K., France, Portugal and Germany. The PCA VISION contest challenged students to share their vision of stylish, functional and professional clothing for a specific job in any sector of their choice. The student designers were evaluated based on how their garments would meet the needs of these workers and help enhance their ability to perform the job.
The contest launched in September 2017 with students submitting sketchbooks and designs for first round judging in February 2018. The selected finalists were then tasked with bringing their designs to life by making a complete work outfit. The final garment concepts were reviewed by the judging panel at the end of May 2018.
The results are in and the winners were announced live at the Professional Clothing Awards annual gala event on June 20, 2018 at the Park Plaza London Riverbank. Summer Gill from Bedford College was named the overall winner and Thomas Davidson from Manchester Fashion Institute was the recipient of the CORDURA® Durable Design Award.
The overall winning design from Gill was created with airport personnel in mind and demonstrates creativity, versatility, professionalism and technical understanding of the job requirements. She was inspired by streetwear fashion and wanted to create a garment that was both practical for work and fashionable enough to wear off the job.
Davidson’s design was creative, commercial and practical for professional tradesman and fully embodies our Live Durable™ brand ethos. The design reflects a thorough understanding of the challenges faced on the jobsite and presents an innovative durable solution to meet the needs of the worker.
